Called to be Hipsters?

Saturday, November 07, 2015

Are we called to be hipsters? I know you're probably wondering if I'm crazy.

"That poor girl, she's been so desperate for a new post that she's gone insane!"
Have no fear, let me explain myself.
A hipster can be defined as someone who is different, unconventional, who doesn't follow fads and traditions of this world. (At least that's my definition, al though nowadays there are way too many so called hipsters)
Doesn't that sound like what God calls us to be in Dueteronomy
"You have been set apart as holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure." Dueteronomy 14:2
We're to be set-apart or different from the world! This is repeated in Romans.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2
We're not supposed to be followers of this world's fads and shallow goals, but we must be changed into who God wants us to be.
"You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket." Matthew 5:14
We're the light of the world, which also means that the rest of the world is the darkness. We're the contrast, the polar opposite of it! We're the hipsters you could say.
Set-apart, that's what we're called to be! The world will hate us, make fun of us, but we must stand out, hipsters for God!
Now well we're on the subject, why in the world is Starbucks considered to be hipster? It's not! Everyone goes there, everyone loves it, and it's definitely no longer somewhere only unconvectional people go! Ok, end of rant. Back to subject!
I'm challenging you to be a Hipster for God! It won't be easy, or always fun, but I promise it'll be worth it.
     Sincerely, Rachel R.
